Life on the planet Lucarr changed hundreds of years ago with the arrival of the Ergolians, a nomadic alien species, whose sole purpose was to enslave the native Lucarrians and put them to work in the Energy Matrix. Until now, the Ergolians had left Grindall’s village in the Heeratta Mountains alone, fearful of their fighting prowess and Cheotra skills. But no longer. The lowland Lucarrians are too weak to continue working the Matrix – and the Grand Keeper Pergamon has decreed the next batch of slaves need to be of stronger stock. Grindell’s biggest problem in a mostly idyllic life is dealing with the local bullies, Grumblebatch and his gang - until the day the Ergolians decimate his village, killing his grandfather and the Council Elders and round up all able workers. Grindell and Grumblebatch, Cheotra trainees both, become unlikely allies and, after recruiting a few more survivors, they set off down the mountains to rescue their friends and fellow villagers, determined to put an end to the Ergolian reign of terror. Their goal is to reach the Ergolian fortress to the south, a massive stronghold of machinery and might, surrounded by swamps and pools of kitrogen, a cold liquid form of nitrogen. Within the walls, however, all is not well and the struggle for ultimate power leads to intrigue and betrayal. Pegonasi, the chief engineer, has no such designs and likes to keep his head down, hoping that his sympathy for the enslaved Lucarrians is not obvious. His wish for an uncomplicated life is not to be and his path is set to clash with Thrix, the Grand Keeper’s secret assassin and Berg, his perfidious friend. With a little bit of help from the mysterious monks of old, Grindell, Grumblebatch and the rest of the small group of Lucarrians reach the fortress walls. This is where their friendship and loyalties will be even more sorely tested and their courage and resourcefulness needed more than ever.
