When Miss Gwilt flings herself from the first-class deck of a Thames steamer, her attempted suicide sets off events that lead to Allan Armadale inheriting Thorpe-Ambrose in Norfolk, romantic rivalries, espionage, counter-espionage and greedy plans for murder.
