It will be obvious to you that in contending for the authenticity of documents which have thus officially been declared false by the government itself whose agents issued them, I have been laboring under a disadvantage which it has been impossible altogether to overcome, the certificates themselves and my confidence in those who produced them being the only evidence and argument that I have to oppose to this formal and public declaration. The opinion expressed by Campenhausen, that some public notice should be taken by the government of the United States of these French official calumnies will doubtless be duly weighed by the President.
