'Escape From Consecration' is Book One of "The Welkin Chronicles," a futurist trilogy. Consecration is a post-apocalyptic commune in the wild mountains of what was British Columbia. In this fundamentalist cult, male elders subjugate women and girls, forcing their "Duty" on them, denying them anything that could make life not just easier, but bearable. Austerity, a young mother – brutalized, terrified of sex – is desperate to save her twelve year old daughter. She dreams of finding the legendary Welkin, a place described by her own mother, where, amazingly, women are free and equal citizens. 'Escape From Consecration' is the beginning of her journey toward becoming the strong, independent - and whole - woman she was meant to be.

The story begins as a journey by Austerity escaping with her teenage daughter Tabitha, and a young man, Noah, who has befriended them.
Fleeing the mountain wilderness, the trio join a traveling medicine show, "The Circus of Good Health," a colorful, eccentric group that becomes their surrogate family. Each summer the troupe travels as far north as Prince George; its southern quarters are in Coeur D'Arlene, in what present-day Idaho.

The cities of The Old Times have long been uninhabitable, infested by a radiation called the luminance, and surrounded by predatory mutant bands. Well away from contaminated places known as "Port Land" and "Siyóttle," only rural communal farms and small towns still exist, their technology reduced to primitive. There the troupe sells its medicines.

Leading the group is Fidéle, a handsome seeming-mountebank and magician. The tension between him and Austerity is an undercurrent of the plot. The other members of the group each have a backstory, and a common mystery, all of which wait to be resolved.

Will Austerity leave the medicine show in her quest for the legend, or can she convince the others to brave the dangerous New Times in search of the "El Dorado" of this age, the myth called Welkin.

Indeed, is "Welkin" a myth, a place, or a archetype of a new society?

And can this woman, whose only experience with heterosexual love is rape, ever overcome the horror of 15 years of slavery? Will she become the celibate leader of a new culture based on love, trust, and sharing?
