It is a series of stories of realism about different conflicts between people from mainland China during 1960s to early 2000s - such as conflicts of mentality within themselves, conflicts with people against each other, as well as conflicts with 'the external world'. And concerning the various characters in the book (e.g. a miser, an aggressive village woman, a businessman, a divorced lady, a child from broken family, a newspaper-seller, a prudent city girl, a serviceman, a mother, a spiritualist, intellectuals); the author shapes their unique image with specific portrayals on how each one of them's personality and desires lead to one's further actions.

Furthermore, the events occured in the stories are in general quite dramatic and usually with unexpected endings.
