Qi, Lanshan is going to Beijing to find his uncle. He meets Lao Jin on the train, and he is also going to Beijing for a petition. Soon after he unexpectedly saves a villager who is also a human rights defender from the police. The old petitioner Qin, Nuhuo takes Lao Jin to jump off the train. Qi, Lanshan walks out of the Beijing Railway Station and falls asleep on the grass. The entire construction site where his uncle works at has to shut down by heavy rain. Qi, Lanshan and some other co-workers find another job which works for ceremony decorations. After the ceremony starts, a petitioner with a mask breaks into the party and diffuses a swarm of flies, and then the police arrives and takes him away from the party and sends him back to his hometown. After getting off the car, Qi, Lanshan suddenly realizes that his home disappears. It is nothing but a large wasteland in front of him. His neighbors are not there, as well as the town's Police Station, and the government are not there.

The next morning, a burst of drum noise wakes him up. Ahead of a small town, at a corner, a man who is going to marry his daughter. It is just on such a painful wedding, he meets an estate salesman who escapes from Beijing......

This novel tells about under China's totalitarian regime, a group of homeless people who live with passion and courage and ultimately obtain a hope through their resistance. This story emphasizes how people re-build their homes, and with a solemn writing style to analyze different levels of social experiences and their misfortune in order to characterize a sad, tragic, and bizarre hell on earth.
