The Engagement of India explores the strategies that key states have employed to engage and shape the relationship with a rising and newly vibrant India. The book also examines how India is attempting to shape relations with several small and middle power states in Asia through its own engagement strategies. Engagement is defined here as a distinctive strategy where a state tries to shape the foreign and domestic policies of another state through positive inducements. The chapters look at the engagement strategies of the US, Australia, Japan, Russia, and China toward India. The book also examines India's own strategies to engage with Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Central Asian republics. The authors in this volume describe India's responses--positive, ambivalent, and sometimes hostile--to engagement as well as the results of India's own attempts to benefit from new relationships. This book provides an excellent overview of India's contemporary foreign relations with these key states.
