El Paso, Texas, has produced some of the greatest athletes, coaches and sports administrators in the country. People like jockey Bill Shoemaker, coach Don Haskins, golfer Lee Trevino, athlete/coach Nolan Richardson and many more.

The first El Paso settlement can be traced to the great Spanish explorer, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, in the 16th century. However, El Paso didn't begin to be a viable city until 1881 when the first railroad arrived. Sports in the area, especially baseball, really blossomed after that.
