Shirley

'Shirley' is set during the Luddite uprisings in Yorkshire in 1811-12, and deals with themes of social unrest and the relations between the sexes. The title character is modelled on Charlotte's sister (and 'Wuthering Heights' author) Emily Brontë, and Caroline Helstone is modelled on Anne Brontë.
