The Male Man is a factual account of the author’s experiences as a mail carrier in the city of Fresno, California, a job which he continued for thirty-six years.
The book gives a unique insight into how the US postal system works and what it actually takes to make deliveries to every household in the country six days a week. Charles Noli also gives his personal insight into the job, including the trouble that mailmen can get into with the women on their rounds and also the many harrowing dog attacks, experiences that are told with great humor.
The camaraderie and personal relationships that are established in this occupation also give Charles cause to recollect the numerous fishing and camping trips he has enjoyed with the many friends he has made within the postal service. Most prominent is Charles’s relationship with his friend “Dutch,” better known as the “Dirty Dutchman,” who never had a serious moment in his life. He is just one of the amusing characters that Charles describes in this most entertaining memoir.
