Language, Literature, and Culture: Studying the Interconnections of Our Shared Knowledge

"Language, Literature and Culture uses an interdisciplinary methodology to connect three separate and vast disciplines. The material combines the examination of the history of ideas with traditional philosophical analysis to show that these three different disciplines are, at heart, linked by common concepts.

Students will explore high and low culture, linguistic determinism, cultural and moral relativism, and theories of translation. They will consider The Enlightenment and the modern reaction to it, Post-Modernism.

Language, Literature and Culture prepares students to discuss, in a thoughtful and informative way, how common ideas across differing fields of study can serve as both linking and explanatory devices. The text is suitable for courses in the humanities, literature, advanced language study, and linguistics.

Holbrook Robinson holds a Ph.D. in French literature from Harvard University and a B.A. in philosophy from Princeton University. Dr. Robinson is an associate professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, where he has developed and taught courses on French culture and literature, French existentialism, the modern French novel, theory of literature, and aesthetics."
