Originally sent with a partner to study the American prison system, Alexis de Tocqueville instead spent the year of 1831 traveling the United States and observing the society of a nation only recently born of a colonial revolution. While de Tocqueville did publish his examination of the United States penitentiary system, his later analysis of American society and values as it evolved past its revolutionary beginnings is far better remembered.
