Over a decade after leaving his native Philippine islands Crisostomo Ibarra returns as Simoun, a wealthy businessman and close confidant of the Captain-General. In the thirteen years since he has been in his native country Simoun has replaced his idealism with cynicism and an obsession with revenge against the Spanish-Philippine government he believes responsible for his long list of misfortunes. Since inspiring his nation would not work, he plans to ignite revolution from within the government he hated.
Published in 1891 under the Spanish title “El Filibusterismo,” “The Reign of Greed” is the English translation of Filipino author José Rizal’s second novel. Rizal, regarded as a Philippine national hero, inspired his nation through his two novels and is now credited with inspiring the real Philippine revolution against Spanish colonialism. He paid for his revolutionary pieces with his exile and eventual execution. His literary masterpieces are now required reading in the Philippines.
