Published long after his death, the memoirs of Bernal Diaz, conquistador for Cortes during the invasion of Mexico, and later, Governor of Guatemala, tell story of the conquest of the Aztecs by the Spanish in the early 16th century. Diaz disagreed with the perspectives of other historians of the events, who emphasized the brutality of the Spanish; Diaz believed in the humanity and justness of the conquistadors and this work was an attempt to tell the story from the perspective of those who perpetrated it in a positive light.
