Written against the backdrop of the French Revolution, A Vindication of the Rights of Women is considered the original template and treatise for feminism, arguing against a perspective that women had only to be educated on domestic subjects put forth to the French National Assembly by Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord in 1791. Vindication is a call for equality which is fundamental to many social movements up to the present day.
