A product of an incestuous marriage in the hills of Arkansas, Willa Sue Thornrow takes drastic action to save herself from her father’s advances. She saves her mother from certain death and herself from being made to take her mother’s place in the household. With the understanding and blessings of a Preacher-man friend, Willa Sue and her mother, Ivy Mae, hit the trail west to find a new life. For safety’s sake, Willa Sue masquerades as a boy called Will.
