In the 1980s, Diane Bell's Daughters of the Dreaming brought the richness of Central Australian Aboriginal women's religious lives into sharp focus: women had sacred sites, songs, and rituals. Women were to be included in land claims and law reform. In Ngarindjerri Wurruwarrin, she presents a finely textured ethnographic portrait o a very different Aboriginal culture. Or is it? Missionaries and assimilation have taken their toll. Anthropolo-gists have written of the Ngarrindjeri in the past tense; only memory remains. Diane Bell finds otherwise.
