Mechanical Engineering for Sustainable Development: State-of-the-Art Research provides some valuable insight into diverse topics related to mechanical engineering and the state-of-the-art work on sustainable development being carried out throughout the world by budding researchers and scientists.

The volume is divided into three sections, covering Machine Design, Materials and Manufacturing, and Thermal Engineering. The work presented is both experimental and numerical (computational/simulation) in nature.

The section on machine design introduces a number of innovative research works of relevance to such varied fields as automative, agriculture, and human anatomy. The second section looks at new research in materials and manufacturing technology, which is growing at a fast pace with advances in nanomaterials, composite materials, and functional graded materials, in addition to the developments in the use of optimization tools in cutting and forming processes. The volume addresses materials characterization, an important tool in assessing proper materials for application-oriented jobs, and unconventional machining processes, such as EDM, which are emerging beside friction stir welding and forming processes, important in design engineering for new products and tools.

The section on thermal engineering broadly covers the use of viable alternate fuels, such as HHO, biodiesel, etc., with the objective of reducing the burden on petroleum reserves and the environment. Topics include making use of a split injection strategy with the aim to mitigate harmful emissions from existing engines with conventional fuels, sustained supersonic combustion, and Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI).

This volume presents an interdisciplinary selection of research on innovative new technologies with a sustainable focus and will be of interest to those involved in many areas of mechanical engineering.
