It's 1946 and the quaint village of Edingale is abuzz with the news that an American wartime pilot of 32 has purchased Edingale manor. But not everyone is happy about an American coming to live in the village. The three local busybodies aren't and have already pulled him to bits even though they haven't met him.
Hannah Kimble, 27, has heard the gossip concerning the American but Hannah has no time for gossip and simply gets on with her work, running the village shop. Haunted by her past, Hannah has built an impenetrable barrier around her and the only pleasure in her tiring, lonely life is Sailor, her faithful, Border collie.
One evening, Hannah meets the new owner of Edingale Manor but now she's met him, she must endure more heartbreak and sadness.
