This volume addresses the Broad Autism Phenotype (BAP). It provides readers with a current and comprehensive research literature about the BAP. The BAP is composed of biological, emotional, and interpersonal characteristics which resemble those that are commonly associated with the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, the BAP characteristics are more subtle than those characteristics that are typically evident among individuals who meet formal diagnostic criteria for ASD. Initially, these characteristics were first identified in 1944 but researchers and ASD professionals did not pay attention to them until the past 15 years. Many researchers believe that the comprehensive examination of the BAP can yield valuable information concerning the etiology, early identification, and possible prevention of ASD. The volume is composed of five chapters that include the following: recognition of the BAP and its historical origins, the identification and assessment of the BAP, genetic aspects of the BAP, other biological features of the BAP such as anatomical structure and function, and cognitive functioning within the BAP as it relates to the following: perceptual and visual attention, face processing, phonological processing, language functioning, intellectual functioning, and executive functioning. The research literature in this volume should provide readers with an up-to-date status concerning the BAR. The literature discussed comes from researchers across the globe. The volume would also be of interest to psychologists, counselors, and physicians who are often asked by their clients and their family members what is the state of determining the etiology of ASD. Lastly, parents may find critical information in the volume that may assist them in answering questions about ASD related to genetic aspects and identification and assessment of ASD.
