With its thatched cottages and half-timbered houses, Ravenswortt seems no more than another pretty town snug in rural Cheshire. When Ed, Lucy and their children come home from their family holiday, why should they fear anything worse than the October chill and some jet-lag?

Yet this year they are anything but safe even behind their own front door. Is there an uninvited presence in their home, or many? Who is that screaming out in the forest, and is Ed wise to stride off to look into it? Could some malevolent force be at large in Ravenswortt, or is that just a standing stone on the Green?

Plagued by mysteries in a cloud of fear, Ed might have to fight one of the darkest corners of human history just to keep his family's lives from unravelling. Yet how can anyone fight what nobody understands?
