Fresh out of university, Mycroft Holmes assists the British Secretary of State for War, and is a rising star in the government. Through his best friend, Cyrus Douglas, he learns of a series of disappearances and murders in Trinidad. They travel there to investigate a deadly situation based on actual history and tied to the slave trade immediately following the American Civil War. What they discover will forever change Holmes, and set him on the path to become the man he will be in the Doyle adventures.

Mycroft Holmes is a fresh Cambridge graduate and assistant secretary of state when his friendship with Cyrus Douglas, an entrepreneur of African descent, causes him to become embroiled in a deadly mystery in Trinidad. Based in part on actual history of the slave trade following the Civil War.
