My Friend Fritz

Ramesh Batra captures the essence of being an outsider; being of Indian descent in Germany during the post-war years, and at times a novelty. He also describes how the warmth shown by individuals, family and communities can help someone build a home away from home.My Friend Fritz explores friendship, displacement, camaraderie and some of the peculiarities of the German cultural identity. Encompassing anecdotes from ex-German Military personnel and their perspective on the Second World War to those at the other end of the gamut, who were deposed as a consequence of it, and personal recollection of the difficulties of travel between East and West Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall, Batra successfully shows the varying traits as well as the similarities of characters from many of Germany's regions.
