Campbell Synopsis

Born in 1776, Neil Campbell, a younger son of a Scottish Laird whose extravagant lifestyle quickly brings him to bankrupcy, results in the need that his sons earn their own living as soon as they are old enough. Age 15, Neil obtains a post as a clerk to a trading company in Jamaica. But war with France enables him to fulfil his desire to be a soldier and he is commissioned into a British regiment serving in the West Indies. It marks the start of a long and generally successful military career with active service, not only in the West Indies, but in the Peninsula War in Spain and the campaign in northern Europe. Sadly, his year as British Commissioner with Napoleon on Elba is to almost ruin that career when the Emperor escapes.
