Israel's Nuclear Option: Behind the Scenes Diplomacy between Dimona and Washington

Shalom (senior researcher, Ben-Gurion Research Institute, Ben-Gurion U., Israel) presents a history of US-Israeli diplomacy regarding Israel's nuclear program at Dimona from 1960, when its existence was revealed, until 1968, by which time the two countries had come to somewhat of tacit understanding over Israeli maintenance of its nuclear option. Paying particular attention to the debates within the Israeli establishment over whether pursuit of the nuclear option might result in a break in US support, Shalom judges the results of the diplomacy, in which such an outcome was avoided, to be a great success.
