Economists Minford and Vidya Mahambare and Eric Nowell (management, all Cardiff U., Wales) argue that the European Union has chosen to place political integration before market liberalization and has followed policies of protection not only in agriculture but also in manufacturing trade while leaving continental countries' restrictions on trade in services largely intact. Most people in Europe are harmed by such policies, they say, but mostly the British. They offer three alternative suggestions: the Union should adopt new policies of free trade, competition, and deregulation; Britain should renegotiate her terms of membership to avoid the damaging effects of the Union's policies; or Britain should simply leave the Union and continue co-operation in chosen fields.
