Who are the Irish missionaries and what has been their motivation to serve in other areas of the world? Is it for glory, adventure, and/or escape? And what were their achievements? Author Joe Humphreys - a journalist for The Irish Times - visited missionaries' places of service across the globe, seeking to find what motivated them in the past, and what continues to motivate the modern missionary. Along the way, Humphreys meets the women who defied a Catholic Church ban on practicing medicine, the 'turbulent' priests who challenged despots and dictators (and sometimes won), and the aid workers who today fight against such global problems as religious extremism and HIV/AIDS.
