Brian lives with his parents on a large estate called Carrowmore, in Ireland. His parents are landlords.
Brian notices a part of their land is 'unused' and has a tree in the middle of it. He is eager to know why he is always told to stay away from the tree and that part of the land.
No one in the village will go near the tree, and although Brian's father instructed workers to cut it down, no one would hear of it, let alone do it.
Brian takes it upon himself to cut down the tree, although he is warned to do so would not be wise. Will something happen to him? Or are the stories people are discussing really just that?
