In the period 1836 to 1925 some 12,500 men served in the DMP. This book collects information on all these policemen, constituting a quarry for their hundreds of thousands of descendants in Ireland, the United States and elsewhere.
It consists of introductory chapters about the history of policing in Dublin, including the Dublin Parish Watch system, the Dublin Police of 1786 to 1795 and the Dublin Police reforms of 1799, 1808 and 1824 (to illustrate the type of men in the force, their background, lifestyle etc.) followed by a core chapter on 'Tracing your ancestors in the Dublin Metropolitan Police'. This in turn is followed by appendices which include a complete alphabetical list of 12,566 names - of all men who served in the Dublin Metropolitan Police from 1836 to 1925 arranged by year of birth and native parish; and select lists of those who were killed on duty, who were awarded the King's Police Medal, who transferred from the London Metropolitan Police and the Royal Irish Constabulary to the DMP - as well as those who joined the Garda Siochana on its amalgamation with the DMP in 1925.
