This collection of 11 sociolinguistically-oriented articles examines multilingual contexts from a general perspective, trilingual language use in the family and wider community, and the formulation and implementation of language policies with regard to education. Trilingual communities in Africa, America, Asia, and Europe are featured. Hoffman (sociolinguistics, U. of Salford, UK) grew up in a bilingual family in Germany; Ytsma conducts research at the Fryske Akademy in The Netherlands.
