This book is an account of the life and early career of John Edward Redmond (1856-1918). Breaking off at the watershed year of 1900 when Redmond became chairman of the Irish Party, it is the first part of a projected two-volume biography of this important, controversial, yet neglected figure in the history of pre-independence Irish nationalism.
