Chichester: Remember When
by Phil Hewitt
Chichester and its surrounding villages are full of fascinating people, all with their own tales to tell. For more than ten years Phil Hewitt, Chichester Observer arts editor, has delivered a weekly slice of Chichester nostalgia in the "Remember When" column. These articles have ranged widely over the years, while still focusing on the social and anecdotal history which might otherwise have been lost. This book brings together a selection of the stories Phil has been told, each an absorbing nugget of spoken history.
The articles are arranged chronologically from the First World War. Phil then looks at country life between the wars, the impact of the Second World War, post-war life in the 1950s and '60s, and the world of work and leisure in subsequent decades. The result is a portrait of Chichester in the 20th century, a "must" for all who know and love the city and its surrounds.
