The small resort village of Saugatuck on the shores of Lake Michigan, despite having less than a thousand inhabitants, has been known many famous people. Some lived there before they became so famous including D. K. Ludwig, who was the richest man in the world for a time in the 1970s, and actor Robby Benson, who got his start at 11 at the area's Red Barn Theatre. Others visited the summertime resort including future aviator Amelia Earhart, architect George W. Maher and composer George F. Root. Some of the most interesting visitors arrived touting a cause including suffragettes Susan B. Anthony and Mary A. Livermore, and then-lecturer the poet Carl Sandburg.
