Travel back into the past with two spirited adventurers-Marion, one of the few girls in 17th-century England who can read and write, and 18-year-old Fiona, who talks with trees. Meet Basuba, a midwife who leads them to the ancient wisdom of the Willow People, and Matthew who is willing to carry out a daring plan.

These nature-loving folk are too outspoken for the local authorities. Risking arrest to save a forest from destruction, Fiona finds herself tailed by the local sheriff, and Basuba's reputation as a healer turns a powerful doctor against her. The two must leave their beloved England for the New World to avoid persecution. Their choice forces Marion into one of her most difficult decisions ever.

Aboard ship, the women are in continual conflict with a narrow-minded preacher, George Denton. When Madame Dora, a passenger who is an unscrupulous fortune teller, offers to cast an evil spell over him, the story simmers with confusion, risk-tking, mystery and romance. In the end, the three friends learn-each in her own way- how to acquire wisdom by following the Moon through its cycles.
