Remme's Ride For The Gold

The most daring, grueling and impossible horseback ride in the history of the United States took place in 1855 when a cattle trader raced overland almost 700 miles in the dead of winter to beat a steamship sailing from San Francisco to Portland. At stake was the rider's life savings in gold. To win the unequal race, Remme had to stay in the saddle for six days without sleep, avoid Indians after his scalp, and outwit swollen rivers, snowslides, mountains and the hostile wilderness.
