Neal Smith served in the US Congress from 1958 to 1994. This work explores the United States during the 1930s and 40s. As the author explains: "Some may wonder, what motivated me to write this book? I found the younger generation in the United States, including my children and grandchildren, have great difficulty perceiving the way people in the United States struggled with a depression in the 1930s so severe that it threatened the very survival of our free enterprise system; and, were immediately thereafter forced to fight a major war to save our freedom. If younger generations better understand the conditions and risks of that period, perhaps they will be more motivated to never let them occur again."
