Innocents in the Arctic: The 1951 Spitsbergen Expedition

Now a distinguished scientist, Bull served as cook and glaciologist on the 1951 expedition to Spitsbergen, north of Norway. For nine of the ten young men who set off from the University of Birmingham, it was the first experience in such a desolate place, and though they accomplished much of the scientific work they had planned, their inexperience limited their time and made life miserable for some. Five of the crew gathered in 2001 and decided to record their memories and compile them into a book.
