Kiddush Ha-Shem: An Epic of 1648

Best-selling novelist and playwright, Sholem Asch, was the first Yiddish writer to be read widely in translation and to achieve worldwide fame. Born to an orthodox hasidic family in Kutno, Poland in 1880, he came to the United States in 1909, sojourned frequently in Europe and Israel and died in 1957.

Kiddush HaShem, literally meaning "Sanctification of the Name," is a brilliantly crafted tale focusing on one Jewish family's fate during the infamous Cossack pogroms in the Ukraine in 1648.
