Tremendous changes in attitude, policy and practice in relation to coastal defences have taken place in Britain over the past ten years but considerable conflicts between the interests of protection and those of conservation still remain. The main issue in this book is the desire to find techniques and methods of cliff protection which will provide partial defence but still allow erosion such that exposures are maintained and supply of sediment is continued, albeit at a lower level.
