Born in the midst of the Scottish Enlightenment, Dugald Stewart (1753- 1828) was to become, according to Macintyre (former regional director for the Open U. in Northern Ireland), the "foremost philosopher in Britain." Central to this biography is Macintyre's effort to place Stewart in the context of the intellectual milieu of the time, an effort that is aided by Stewart's broad range of interests—encompassing mathematics, astronomy, economics, political science, aesthetics, and literary criticism—and his large network of intellectual correspondents and acquaintances, a "hotbed of genius" that included Robert Burns, Alexander Nasmyth, Walter Scott, Thomas Campbell, and Maria Edgeworth.
