The Classical Greek House

Combining archaeological and textual evidence, this engaging book reassesses the classical Greek house, asking us to think again about a wide range of issues, including, fundamentally, how a house might be defined by ancient Greeks. Morgan presents detailed case studies of three quite different communities - Athens, Olynthus and Haleis - examining domestic archictecture, but also looking at questions of spatial organisation within the house and in its urban setting, at the roles which rooms and houses might fulfill, economic political and religious as well as strictly domestic, and at the house as ideological symbol, looking at issues of gender and status.
