Edda is single, 28-years-old, and has just received the second worst news ever: her soul mate and best friend Beth is deserting her for Surrey, for Jack, and worst of all for the baby she's expecting all too soon. A final late-night adventure brought on by frustration and Cava leads to an invitation to join South London's most secret society—the Brockley Spades. Suddenly, Edda's life gets a lot more exciting, turning the tables on teary-eyed Beth who is now a martyr to her hormones and missing Edda's shoulder to cry on. Edda is filling her Beth-shaped hole with oh-so-gorgeous Guy—dark-haired, artistic, and prone to picking her up for illicit forays into starlit horticulture—her panty-flashing colleague Amanda, and new lodger Robert who is oh-so-nice but not very exciting. A little light weeding in the dead of night shines a new headlamp on the goings-on down Brockley High Road, and what it reveals is a web of intrigue, riot police, bolt cutters, and bashed up bay trees as well as a new, more adventurous, and independent Edda.
