Brazil was the only South American country to fight in World War I. But four others—Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, and Uruguay—stopped diplomatic relations with Germany, sympathetic to the Allies. Their reward: a place at the Paris Peace Conference and an introduction to the world stage.
