The burro has been a special part of the land that is now called Colorado, dating all the way back to Spanish exploration of the New World. Despite abuse, ridicule, and torture, this little animal still embodies dignity, trust, and an unconditional affection that is legendary. We can learn a lot from the burro, but we must know its story before we can even begin to understand the endearing spirit that dwells in this humble creature.
To tell the story of Colorado's burro properly, On the Backs of Burros includes accounts about early Spanish settlers, Colorado prospectors, and pack-train operators, while detailing the abuse and forgiving nature of this small beast of burden. It is the hope of the authors, P. David Smith and Lyn Bezek, that with the help of this book these forgotten symbols of the Old West will continue to bless Colorado with their unique and civilizing influence. A portion of the proceeds of this book will go to Colorado's Long Hopes, a donkey rescue mission.
