Monica Murphy and Joe Molloy are the products of their environment. When they meet as teenagers, a strong bond is formed and soon they are married. But it's not long before Joe's past creeps into his marriage. Soon Monica becomes the victim of domestic abuse and jealousy as her husband's mental stability comes into question. But in late 1970's Catholic Ireland, walking away from a marriage is certainly not encouraged. Soon Monica finds herself backed into a corner. However as her life takes a turn for the worst, she is forced to act. Her salvation seems to come with the introduction of the Barring Order (under Section 22 of The Family Law Act) in 1976. Soon Monica becomes determined to investigate this further and take the next step. But as she learns more, she questions whether this move can offer her hope or whether it is simply a double edged sword.
