Though most scholars agree that the baroque was succeeded by the neoclassical in English literature about the middle of the 17th century, Canfield (English and comparative cultural and literary studies, U. of Arizona) argues that features such as the monstrous or grotesque, the macabre or morbid, and the outrageous signal the persistence of the baroque even as literature took on respectable neoclassical themes.
