Race Williams, private investigator, is hired to protect a young man who may be a prison escapee, a drug addict, or the victim of an inheritance scheme. He has a horrible battle with the powers of the New York underworld.

Carroll John Daly has been credited as writing the first hard-boiled story, which appeared in the classic Black Mask pulp magazine. His private detective, Race Williams, appeared before Dashiell Hammett's Continental Op character debut.
