In rural 19th century Norway, Johanna Guldberg is coming of age. She is the daughter of the village sheriff, and heiress to the finest farm in the Flatlands: Great Guldberg.
When tragedy strikes Great Guldberg, it is Johanna who must put aside her own sorrows and stand strong for the whole family. As time passes, Johanna is forced to realize that her chosen course may not necessarily be the best one for her, or the people she cares about.
