Twenty years ago, Ruth Carson married a prospector. After three miscarriages, Ruth gave birth to a daughter, alone beside a lonely highway. Her daughter was born with a severe handicap. A year later, her husband died under mysterious circumstances.

Now her older brother Bill is dead. An apparent suicide. Was it really a suicide, or was it murder?

Clay Stone spent fifteen years as a homicide cop. A failed marriage and too many nightmares convinced him to find a new profession. Now he investigates insurance claims and rarely has to confront violent criminals. Right now, however he has a major arson case to solve.

The last thing he needs is a new case, especially if it is murder. But when Ruth's brother Jack asks for his help, Clay can't say no.

Skeptical at first, Clay uncovers enough evidence to convince him that Bill's death may be murder. Proving it however will take a lot more digging.
