William Rankine was born in Peebles in 1861. At age 21, along with almost four hundred Scottish, English and Irish emigrants, he set out for the goldfields of Gympie in New South Wales, Australia. This is his fascinating account of the voyage and near disaster, recorded in his diary and handed down through 4 generations.
